Maine Democratic Senate Candidate Denies Sexual Assault Allegation Amid Calls to Withdraw

Graham Platner, a 41-year-old oysterman and political newcomer running for the U.S. Senate in Maine, faces an accusation of sexual assault from 2021. He has denied the claim, describing it as "troubling, serious and false." The allegation has led Maine Democratic leaders, Senate Democrats, and some former backers to urge him to exit the race by July 13, the deadline for the party to select a replacement nominee.

Platner won the Democratic primary after building a grassroots effort that drew support from progressive voters. Party leaders had preferred Gov. Janet Mills as the nominee, but she declined to run. His campaign encountered earlier controversies, including criticism of a tattoo some linked to Nazi symbolism, reports of extramarital sexting, and inflammatory social media posts. Additional prior statements have also drawn scrutiny: deleted Reddit posts in which Platner suggested sexual assault victims "take some responsibility," and an accusation from a former girlfriend that he engaged in violence. These earlier matters predate the 2021 allegation now under discussion.

The current accusation has prompted preparations by state Democrats. State Sen. Troy Jackson has filed paperwork to seek the nomination, and other candidates have begun positioning themselves ahead of a July 27 party deadline for selecting a replacement. Progressive organizations that supported Platner have stated that any successor should maintain an anti-establishment platform.

Political observers note that parties have long used vetting processes to identify potential liabilities before general elections. Seth Masket, a political scientist at the University of Denver, observed that outsider candidates who bypass traditional structures have become more common. Neera Tanden, president of the Center for American Progress, stated that such candidates can face greater exposure in competitive races where opponents allocate substantial resources to highlighting vulnerabilities.

Similar patterns have appeared in Republican primaries. After the Tea Party movement, several insurgent nominees secured nominations but lost general elections in contests the party had viewed as winnable. Republican strategist Matt Gorman described the current Democratic situation as comparable to Republican experiences from 15 or 20 years earlier.

Former Obama aide Tommy Vietor, who initially backed Platner, has since called for him to withdraw. Vietor noted on the podcast "Pod Save America" that standard campaign vetting does not always surface every allegation but can flag warning signs earlier. Sen. Bernie Sanders appeared with Platner at campaign events as part of a "Fighting Oligarchy" tour.

Maine Democrats are proceeding with contingency planning regardless of Platner's decision. Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which also urged Platner to step aside, said primary voters sought a candidate focused on systemic change. The race targets Republican Sen. Susan Collins and is viewed by both parties as competitive.

The episode has highlighted internal Democratic Party tensions over balancing primary voter preferences with general-election requirements. Platner has not withdrawn as of the latest reports.
