Trump Warns of Severe Consequences if Iran Fails to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump issued a warning on social media Tuesday about potential widespread destruction in Iran unless the country reopens the Strait of Hormuz, prompting reactions from Democrats, conservative commentators, and the Pope amid an ongoing conflict.

The statement followed U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian military sites on February 28, 2026, which initiated the current war. Iran responded by blockading the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for global oil supplies. Trump's post on Truth Social read: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. Later Tuesday, Trump announced a de-escalation, stating that Iran had proposed a 10-point plan he described as “workable.” He indicated that Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire period to finalize an agreement, during which no strikes on Iranian bridges, power plants, or other infrastructure would occur.

The exchange occurred against the backdrop of the month-long conflict, which has involved missile exchanges and disruptions to international shipping. Congressional Democrats and some conservative figures expressed concern over Trump's statement, with several calling for his removal via impeachment or invocation of the 25th Amendment, which allows for transferring power from the president if deemed unable to discharge duties.

Conservative commentator Candace Owens wrote on X that “the 25th amendment needs to be invoked. He is a genocidal lunatic,” adding, “We are beyond madness.”

Tucker Carlson, another former Trump supporter, did not explicitly call for removal but posted a video on X directed at White House and military personnel. He urged them to “say no, absolutely not, and say it directly to the President” regarding any use of a “weapon of mass destruction.”

Pope Leo XIV addressed the situation from Castel Gandolfo, Italy, according to PBS reporting. Speaking in Italian, he described Trump's actions as “truly unacceptable,” citing issues of international law and moral concerns for civilians. The pope stated, “There are certainly issues of international law here, but even more so a moral issue for the good of the whole, entire population.” He added, “I would like to invite everyone to truly think in their hearts about the many innocent people, so many children, so many elderly, completely innocent, who would also become victims of this escalation of a war that began from the very first days.”
