Norwegian Teen Convicted in UK Contract Killing Plot Involving Swedish Criminal Network

A 19-year-old Norwegian man, Johannes Kongsnes Natland, was convicted in Britain of conspiring to carry out a contract killing. Court records show he traveled from Stavanger to the United Kingdom and was directed to collect firearms and ammunition in Huddersfield. Prosecutors linked the case to Sweden’s Foxtrot criminal network, which UK authorities have sanctioned over alleged connections to Iranian state entities and prior attacks on Jewish and Israeli targets in Europe.

The conviction forms part of a series of documented cases in which European courts and security services have examined alleged Iranian involvement in plots against dissidents and other targets. Official statements from prosecutors in several countries describe a pattern in which Iranian authorities have shifted from using state operatives to engaging criminal intermediaries, a method that provides greater separation from direct attribution.

In 2021, former European Parliament vice president Alejo Vidal-Quadras was shot outside his Madrid home. Spanish investigators identified a criminal network with reported ties to Tehran. Vidal-Quadras had publicly supported Iranian opposition groups, including the National Council of Resistance of Iran. The attack was not fatal, and the gunman escaped.

In 2018, Belgian authorities arrested Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi after he transported explosives on a commercial flight from Tehran. He and several accomplices were convicted of planning an attack on an opposition gathering near Paris attended by thousands of people, including European and North American officials. Court evidence established that the plot originated at senior levels of the Iranian government. Assadi used his diplomatic status during the operation.

UK security services have publicly reported responding to more than 20 Iran-linked plots since 2022. These include surveillance of dissidents, cyber operations, and attempts to target journalists and members of Jewish and Israeli communities. MI5 statements place Iran among the principal state actors posing threats to British interests, alongside Russia and China.

Iranian authorities have consistently denied directing assassinations or terrorist acts abroad, describing such accusations as politically motivated. European governments have responded with targeted sanctions against specific criminal groups and individuals. The UK has sanctioned the Foxtrot network on grounds of its reported role in attacks linked to Iranian interests.

Iranian diplomatic facilities have been cited in multiple investigations as locations used for intelligence collection and operational support. Several European countries have expelled diplomats after court findings or intelligence assessments established involvement in prohibited activities. Financial measures have also been applied to disrupt networks accused of channeling funds to criminal proxies.

Security agencies across Europe have documented additional activities attributed to Iranian services, including monitoring of opposition figures, influence efforts aimed at academic and media institutions, and attempts to shape public narratives through online channels. These operations are described by officials as efforts to counter criticism of the Iranian government and to deter support for opposition organizations.

The conviction of Natland is one data point among a larger set of prosecutions and intelligence assessments compiled by European governments. Authorities continue to monitor criminal organizations that have been sanctioned for alleged cooperation with Iranian entities. Further legal proceedings and sanctions designations remain under consideration in several capitals.
