Thomas Massie Loses Kentucky Republican Primary to Trump-Backed Challenger Ed Gallrein

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., was defeated in the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District on May 19, 2026, by Ed Gallrein, a challenger who received support from President Donald Trump. The race concluded with Gallrein securing the nomination.

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted on X that she was proud to have served with Massie, describing him as “a giant among weak pathetic men.” She stated that releasing the Epstein files contributed to their political challenges but added that it was worthwhile because “now everyone knows the truth.” Greene further wrote that voters are “ruled by the Epstein class that cares nothing about you and your elected leaders are bought and controlled by a foreign lobby.” In a separate post, she said the future of the Republican Party had been destroyed and that a Real America First Movement would rise under younger generations.

Massie responded to a post by Rep. Erin Houchin, R-Ind., who congratulated Trump and Gallrein on the outcome. Massie replied, “How do his boots taste?” During his concession speech, Massie noted that he had called his opponent to concede and remarked that it took time to locate Gallrein in Tel Aviv.

Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., posted a graphic depicting Massie with tears and labeling him a “LOSER.” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., wrote on X that the results demonstrated “the power of Donald Trump.” Graham congratulated Gallrein, describing him as a warrior and businessman who had sacrificed for the nation. Graham also stated that he had differences with Massie but admired that the congressman stayed true to his beliefs.

The primary contest occurred in a district that encompasses rural counties in northern Kentucky with a voter base that has consistently supported Republican candidates in recent cycles. Campaign finance records showed elevated spending on both sides, including outside expenditures tied to national political action committees aligned with the Trump campaign. Voter turnout in the primary reflected participation levels typical for off-year contests in the district, with stronger engagement in suburban and rural precincts.

Gallrein, a Navy SEAL veteran and businessman, positioned his campaign around alignment with Trump’s policy priorities. Massie had served in the House since 2012 and maintained a record of opposing certain spending measures and foreign aid packages. The Epstein Files Transparency Act, which Massie co-sponsored with Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., had been the subject of a joint news conference in November 2025.

Trump had previously criticized Massie during the campaign and urged voters in Kentucky to remove him from office. The primary outcome leaves Gallrein as the Republican nominee for the general election in November 2026.
