Democratic Socialist Candidates Face Electoral Tests Amid Republican Vulnerabilities

Left-wing candidates have drawn attention for past statements on cultural issues, while Republican setbacks have created openings for Democrats in several states.

In Wisconsin, Democratic gubernatorial frontrunner Rep. Francesca Hong faced questions after CNN highlighted older social media posts in which she discussed canceling Thanksgiving. Hong responded by noting her background as a chef and emphasizing her experience bringing people together, without directly affirming or rejecting the earlier comments. She has since clarified aspects of those remarks in subsequent statements. Hong has also sought to distance herself from earlier calls to reduce police funding, though the shift has drawn scrutiny from both supporters and opponents.

Hong represents a group of candidates aligned with democratic socialist positions who have advanced in Democratic primaries, including in states that are not uniformly deep blue. These candidates have emphasized domestic spending priorities over foreign military commitments. Their rise coincides with President Donald Trump’s job approval rating falling below 40 percent in some polls, particularly on economic matters, which has opened space for Democratic contenders across the spectrum.

Trump has criticized these candidates directly. At the same time, his administration’s focus on certain foreign policy matters, including tensions with Iran, has been cited by analysts as a factor limiting attention to domestic economic pressures such as inflation. This dynamic has allowed some Democratic candidates to argue for redirecting resources toward domestic needs, a framing that overlaps with elements of the “America First” approach previously associated with Trump.

Not all candidates in this cohort have emphasized cultural issues equally. Sen. Bernie Sanders maintained a primary focus on economic questions during his presidential campaigns, even as some progressive groups pressed for stronger stances on immigration and related topics. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has at times calibrated messaging to avoid alienating voters outside his core base. Younger candidates, however, have more consistently highlighted identity-related themes alongside economic ones.

A recurring point of division concerns the degree to which the nation’s history of racial injustice should shape current policy and national identity. Candidates on the left have argued that systemic racism remains central to American institutions, while others contend that founding principles retain value despite acknowledged flaws. These debates occur in a demographic and cultural environment more complex than earlier periods of civil rights activism.

Sustaining an “America First” message has proven challenging for candidates whose rhetoric has been critical of aspects of U.S. history and institutions. Opposition to specific foreign engagements has not always translated into broader positive framing of national traditions. Still, such positions could prove sufficient in the 2026 midterm environment, where economic discontent with the incumbent party remains a factor.

Some of these candidates have moderated elements of their platforms over time, while others have maintained consistent views. The long-term viability of the broader agenda—expanded social spending, reduced emphasis on law enforcement, and shifts in immigration policy—will depend on voter response in competitive districts. Continuous immigration and academic trends favoring progressive viewpoints have not produced majority support for the full program in most national polling.

Republican-aligned movements are expected to contest future cycles against an expanded left wing within the Democratic Party. The outcome of the current period will influence how many subsequent opportunities arise. The Wisconsin contest and similar races offer one early indicator of whether cultural positioning will constrain or enable gains for these candidates.
