Trump Says Iran Talks to Begin Monday as Tehran Reports Progress on Hormuz Shipping Route With Oman

Good morning. Donald Trump stated that talks with Iran would take place on Monday without setting a deadline for an agreement, after previously indicating he had called off a planned military action. Iran stated it was close to an agreement with Oman on a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz and had no plans to host or send a delegation for talks.

On Saturday night, Trump posted on social media that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries had requested time to finalize an arrangement that would produce the immediate, complete and total reopening of the strait and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat. He stated that Tehran must rapidly make a deal.

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, told state television on Sunday that an understanding was near with Oman on a route through the waterway. “We are now going to reach an understanding on a route acceptable to both sides – neither the northern route nor the southern route – but one that respects the sovereign rights of both sides and safeguards our national interests and security,” he said.

Robert F Kennedy Jr, the US health secretary, on Sunday told American parents that they should get their children vaccinated against measles, as the number of infections has reached levels not seen in the past 35 years. Kennedy made the statement during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union.

The number of confirmed measles cases in the US this year has reached 2,371, exceeding the 2025 total of 2,289. Combined, the past two years have recorded more measles infections than in the rest of the 21st century combined. The last year with a higher single-year total was 1991.

Republican Senator Bernie Moreno on Sunday called for Representative Max Miller, his former son-in-law, to resign from Congress following allegations of domestic and child abuse. Moreno had previously declined to comment directly on the claims made by his daughter Emily Moreno.

Miller appeared in a live stream on Sunday morning to deny the allegations and state that he would remain in the race for re-election ahead of Wednesday’s ballot replacement deadline. “Just want to be clear: no court, no agency has ever substantiated any allegation of abuse against me. No criminal charge has ever been filed against me,” Miller said.
