Trump Reports Progress Toward Iran Nuclear Agreement, Cancels Planned Strikes

President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that the United States had reached an agreement in principle with Iran that would prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and that he had canceled scheduled U.S. military strikes as a result.

Speaking during a virtual event supporting Georgia gubernatorial candidate Burt Jones, Trump said an understanding had been reached that would bar Iran from obtaining nuclear arms. “I don’t know if you heard, but we ended the war with Iran today, and they have agreed never to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said. “That was the whole purpose. That was 95% of it.”

Trump described the development as the outcome of extended indirect talks and recent U.S. military measures. “Probably you heard that today we settled up with Iran. We made a great deal,” he told participants. “There’ll be no nuclear weapons. People will start coming home very soon. It’s pretty much completed. We got everything we wanted.”

Earlier in the day, Trump posted on Truth Social that he had directed the cancellation of strikes after discussions reached senior Iranian officials. “Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening,” the post read. He added that a naval blockade would continue until a final text was completed and that a signing ceremony would be scheduled.

In later remarks from the Oval Office, Trump said the memorandum of understanding remained subject to final documentation and could be completed within several days. He indicated that a ceremony might occur in Europe as early as the weekend and that Vice President JD Vance could head the U.S. delegation. Trump said he had consulted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and several Arab officials during the day.

When asked about approval by Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, Trump said he understood the answer to be affirmative. He reiterated that the central condition remained the prevention of an Iranian nuclear weapon. “They will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said. “They will not only not have, they will not purchase, develop in any way, shape, or form a nuclear weapon.”

Trump attributed the movement in talks to the cumulative effect of prior military actions. “They’ve taken a pounding. They’ve taken a pounding like very few people could take,” he said. “And they want to make a deal a lot more than I do.”

Public details on the prospective memorandum remain limited. Reports have described provisions that would extend a ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and establish a new round of nuclear negotiations, along with a framework for later discussions on sanctions relief. Iranian officials have not confirmed the terms outlined by Trump.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei stated Thursday that while substantial portions of a negotiating text had been prepared, Tehran had not yet reached a final decision. “Iran has not yet reached a final conclusion regarding an agreement,” Baghaei said, according to Iranian state media. Other Iranian statements have noted that talks have advanced and that differences over frozen assets, access through the Strait of Hormuz, and future nuclear arrangements have narrowed in recent days.

Following a telephone conversation with Trump, Netanyahu’s office issued a statement indicating that the prime minister had welcomed the U.S. position that any completed agreement should address Iran’s stock of enriched nuclear material, its enrichment facilities, missile production, and support for regional armed groups.

The sequence of events follows months of intermittent indirect contacts between the two governments amid ongoing regional hostilities and U.S. naval deployments in the area. No final text has been released, and both sides have described remaining procedural steps before any formal signing.
