June 26 (UPI) -- The death toll from two strong earthquakes that struck Venezuela has continued to increase as the United States and other countries dispatched rescue teams and emergency supplies to the South American nation.
As of 7 p.m. local time Thursday, at least 235 people were confirmed dead and more than 4,300 injured, Venezuelan Health Minister Carlos Alvarado stated on state broadcaster VTV, according to Venezuelan outlet Globovision. Additional fatalities are expected as rescuers search through rubble from collapsed structures.
Approximately 250 buildings sustained damage in northern Venezuela from the earthquakes that occurred Wednesday evening, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez reported. He previously stated that around 200 people remained trapped under debris and more than 150 individuals were listed as missing.
"The main mission we all have at this hour is to be united," Rodriguez said Thursday. "It is to set aside any form of diatribe, any form of situation, position or opinion that divides us, and become a single force, a single voice, a single person, a sea of arms that helps and cares for the people who have directly suffered the hardships of this tragedy."
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez confirmed that international search-and-rescue operations had been organized to support Venezuelan emergency teams. Logistical and institutional assistance has been offered by multiple heads of state as well as the United Nations.
"Specialized rescuers certified by the U.N. system are already being sent and are on their way to our country to support these efforts," she said.
U.S. Southern Command announced it was deploying military assets to Venezuela, including the USS Fort Lauderdale and the USS Billings. In a statement issued early Friday, SOUTHCOM said its leadership had reached Caracas to coordinate assistance.
El Salvador dispatched 188 rescuers who arrived in Venezuela to participate in search operations, Rodriguez stated.
