Trump Comments on Migrant Crossings Into Spanish Enclave of Ceuta

US President Donald Trump has described recent migrant crossings into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta as a major security concern, while administration officials have linked the events to policies of the Spanish government under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Trump has maintained a tense relationship with Sánchez, who has publicly differed with the US president on issues including defense spending and the conflict in Iran.

During a cabinet meeting on Friday, Trump stated that he had observed events in Spain and referred to them as an invasion involving hundreds of thousands of people. He added that similar developments could occur in the United States if Republicans were not elected, describing the potential scale as larger and easier to enter. In a subsequent post on Truth Social, Trump shared video footage of crossings and compared the situation to events during the prior US administration, stating that the pattern would recur if Democrats regained power.

An estimated 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the North African coast that shares a land border with Morocco. Reports indicate that at least 18 people were killed during the crossings, with some accounts placing the figure as high as 57. Spanish authorities later stated that nearly all of those who entered had returned to Morocco. Of the total crossings, approximately 50,000 individuals returned voluntarily on the same day.

US Vice President JD Vance posted on social media that the images from Spain served as a reminder of the results of mass migration. He noted that the US border no longer presented similar scenes following the election of the current president. Vance had previously addressed European immigration policies at the Munich Security Conference, attributing large-scale movements to decisions by EU officials.

The US Department of State issued a statement criticizing the Spanish government’s handling of the border, describing the incident as the result of deliberate policies that facilitated illegal migration into Europe. The statement indicated that the United States was evaluating measures to protect its citizens and expressed readiness to support other European countries considering comparable steps. It added that the situation would not have arisen if Spain had a leader with policies similar to Trump’s.

House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that socialists were damaging Spain and characterized the influx as an example of certain political practices in action. Elon Musk, a former adviser to Trump, shared video from the 2013 film World War Z with a comment on the events in Spain, later clarifying that the post was humorous and then posting separate footage of Venezuelan migrants attempting to enter the United States in 2023.

Ceuta operates under Spanish sovereignty but maintains a separate status from the Schengen area, requiring additional checks for travel to mainland Spain. Sánchez described the crossings as an attack on Spain’s territorial integrity and said the government would deploy all available state resources to maintain security. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that practically all individuals who had entered Ceuta had already returned to Morocco.

The enclave is separated from the Spanish mainland by the Strait of Gibraltar. A pneumatic barrier has been deployed in adjacent waters by Spanish security forces to strengthen border controls. Spanish police and military personnel have been involved in escorting groups of migrants during processing and return operations.
