The expanded World Cup opens with familiar U.S. expectations alongside documented access and pricing challenges. Success for the hosts will depend on both on-field results and whether organizers address the logistical friction already visible in the first matches.

What outlets missed

Most coverage centered on U.S. team quotes and historical framing while giving limited attention to documented visa denials affecting fans from Argentina and officials including the Palestinian Football Association head. Reports of dynamic pricing producing empty sections at multiple venues and the introduction of mandatory hydration breaks received only passing mention. The three red cards shown in Mexico’s opener, a tournament record for an opening match, were noted but not placed in the context of officiating trends across the expanded schedule.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, the first hosted across three nations and expanded to 48 teams, began its group stage with the United States facing Paraguay on Friday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The match marks the first World Cup game on American soil since 1994.

The United States enters ranked 17th by FIFA, favored in the matchup against 41st-ranked Paraguay yet outside the top 10 betting favorites to win the tournament. Coach Mauricio Pochettino has emphasized building a more aggressive style and stronger team culture after the side reached only the round of 16 in 2022. Midfielder Tim Weah said the group aims to move past a prior reputation as “the good guys” and play with greater physicality.

Canada, another co-host, opens its campaign the same day against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto. Mexico opened the tournament Thursday with a 2-0 win over South Africa at Estadio Azteca that featured three red cards, the most in any opening match in World Cup history.

Several logistical issues have drawn attention. Ticket prices have left visible empty seats at early matches, and some international fans and federation officials reported visa denials or delays for entry into the United States. FIFA has stated it cannot override national immigration decisions. Organizers have also introduced fixed hydration breaks in each half regardless of weather.

The United States plays Australia on June 19 in Seattle and Turkey on June 25 in Inglewood. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups plus the eight best third-place sides advance to a new round of 32.
