Trump's Fracturing Ceasefire Reveals Alliance Rot

The two-week ceasefire with Iran was never going to hold if its architects couldn't even agree on what it covered. Within hours of the announcement, Israeli strikes had killed more than 250 in Lebanon, Hezbollah resumed firing rockets, and Iran kept the Strait of Hormuz largely closed. Oil prices spiked toward $100 a barrel. The talks scheduled for Pakistan this weekend will test whether diplomats can paper over contradictions that were obvious from the start.

This isn't a surprise. It's the predictable result of a foreign policy built on unilateral announcements, maximalist demands, and contempt for multilateral institutions. President Trump's public blasting of NATO allies for insufficient support on Iran, complete with threats of punishment and troop reallocations, exposes the deeper problem: an alliance designed for European territorial defense is being asked to underwrite open-ended Middle East campaigns without genuine consultation or shared strategy. NATO finally hit its defense spending targets last year, yet that achievement is dismissed because European capitals wouldn't follow us into another conflict over Iranian nuclear sites and proxies.

The liberal critique here isn't pacifism; it's institutional realism. Alliances aren't vending machines. They require sustained diplomatic investment, not public hectoring on Truth Social. The Hormuz disputes over tolls, security guarantees, and enrichment rights were never going to vanish because Washington declared victory. Iran's layered demands and Israel's continued campaign against Hezbollah reflect clashing regional realities that no amount of American unilateralism can simply wish away. The economic pain is already landing on American households: higher gas prices layered atop an economy that just revised Q4 growth down to 0.5 percent, with incomes falling even as consumer spending barely holds.

At home, the partisan blockade is even more dispiriting. House Republicans prevented Democrats from forcing a war powers vote, preserving maximal executive latitude while a fragile pause unravels. Democratic pushes for the 25th Amendment feel like theater given the constitutional barriers, but they register a genuine anxiety about erratic decision-making with lives and markets on the line. The same Congress that can't reassert its constitutional role on military action has nonetheless passed sweeping domestic changes: firing over 100 immigration judges to accelerate deportations, slashing SNAP rolls by 2.5 million through tighter work requirements and eligibility checks, and watching the EPA under Lee Zeldin begin repealing the 2009 endangerment finding.

This is governance as score-settling. The immigration court overhaul may clear a backlog, but it risks replacing independent judgment with political quotas. SNAP reductions target a documented error rate, yet they arrive without falling unemployment and amid reports of hardship for refugee families. Climate rollbacks cheer the Heartland Institute crowd but ignore the measurable long-term costs the administration now treats as speculative. These aren't separate stories from the Iran crisis; they reflect the same impatience with checks, expertise, and trade-offs.

What ties it together is a theory of power that treats institutions as obstacles rather than force multipliers. NATO's limits were always real; the alliance was never built for Hormuz. But publicly eroding its credibility while Russia watches weakens deterrence far more than any single European refusal to bomb Iranian targets. Similarly, Congress has a legitimate role in authorizing sustained conflict, yet partisan majorities have neutered the 1973 War Powers Resolution for decades. The midterms, not procedural maneuvers, will likely deliver the next real constraint.

The liberal wager has always been that durable solutions require durable institutions: alliances with genuine burden-sharing, congressional oversight that transcends parties, regulatory processes grounded in evidence rather than ideology. The fraying ceasefire, climbing oil prices, and domestic retrenchment test that wager. Pakistan talks may buy time. They won't fix the deeper contradictions. American families already feeling the pinch at the pump and in their grocery budgets deserve policy that matches complexity instead of declaring victory and moving on. The alternative is repeated cycles of escalation, economic shock, and institutional erosion. We've seen this movie before. The sequel looks familiar.
