Three candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won Democratic congressional primaries in New York on June 23, 2026. Brad Lander defeated incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District. Darializa Avila Chevalier unseated Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District. Claire Valdez won the open 7th District. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declined to comment on the New York outcomes when asked by Fox News Digital. Rep. Ilhan Omar also did not respond to questions about whether the winners would affect House Democratic leadership priorities. Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia welcomed the victors to the caucus and distinguished their criticism of the Netanyahu government from opposition to Israel itself.
President Trump described the results as evidence of communist influence and warned that rent-control policies would turn buildings into slums. Conservative commentators linked the victories to immigration and foreign-born voters. Progressive outlets countered that right-wing coverage exaggerated the scope of change and invoked replacement narratives without presenting recent Census data on New York City demographics.
The three winners have criticized Israel’s Gaza operations. Lander, who is Jewish, stated in his victory speech that criticism of Israel or anti-Zionism does not equate to antisemitism. The Rent Guidelines Board, appointed by Mamdani, later approved a zero-increase guideline for stabilized apartments, prompting landlord resignations and legal warnings.
Early 2028 Democratic presidential polling still shows Kamala Harris leading, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in fourth place. No comparable socialist gains have occurred yet in swing districts or states.
