Bass Advances in LA Mayor Race Amid Pratt Challenge

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass secured a spot in the November runoff election after Tuesday's primary, falling short of the majority needed to win outright under the city's jungle primary rules. With roughly 63 percent of votes counted, Bass held about 35 percent, ahead of reality television personality Spencer Pratt at 30 percent and City Council member Nithya Raman at 22 percent. The outcome leaves the second finalist undetermined as late mail ballots continue to arrive.

Bass, a former congresswoman and state assembly member, has led the city through a series of high-profile difficulties since taking office. The Palisades fire last year destroyed thousands of structures, including Pratt's home, and exposed shortcomings in emergency preparedness and resource allocation. Pratt entered the race citing those losses and broader dissatisfaction with how city leadership handled the disaster and its aftermath. He has argued that bureaucratic delays and misplaced priorities left residents without adequate support.

Homelessness remains a central concern in the contest. Despite expanded spending on shelters and services in recent years, visible encampments and related public safety issues have continued across neighborhoods. Voters in affected areas have expressed frustration that programs emphasizing housing-first approaches have produced limited measurable reductions in street populations. Raman, who has positioned herself further to the left, has pressed for faster and more aggressive interventions, drawing support from younger and more progressive blocs.

Pratt, known for his earlier career on MTV's The Hills, gained attention by highlighting government shortcomings in direct terms. His campaign tapped into resident anger over rising costs, strained services, and the slow pace of rebuilding after the fires. Early returns placed him in contention for the runoff, reflecting a segment of voters willing to back an outsider over established political figures.

California's primary system sends the top two candidates forward regardless of party, setting up a general election that will test whether dissatisfaction with current governance outweighs Bass's incumbency advantages. The winner will oversee preparations for the 2028 Olympics while confronting entrenched problems in housing supply and public order that have resisted previous rounds of policy attention. Vote counting is expected to stretch over days or weeks before the matchup is finalized.
