Michigan Primary Tests Progressive Strength in Swing-State Senate Race

Michigan voters on Tuesday will choose the Democratic nominee for an open U.S. Senate seat that Democrats view as essential to any effort to regain control of the chamber. The contest between Representative Haley Stevens and former Wayne County health director Abdul El-Sayed has drawn more than $60 million in outside spending, much of it from pro-Israel groups, and has become a focal point for disagreements inside the party over economic policy and U.S. support for Israel.

Stevens, 43, a four-term congresswoman from the Detroit suburbs, presents herself as the stronger general-election candidate. She has secured endorsements from Governor Gretchen Whitmer, retiring Senator Gary Peters, and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. Her campaign emphasizes manufacturing jobs and experience. Stevens supports continued U.S. military aid to Israel without conditions and has criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by name.

El-Sayed, 41, the son of Egyptian immigrants, leads recent primary polls by double digits. He is backed by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He advocates Medicare for All, higher taxes on billionaires, and an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. El-Sayed has described Israeli actions in Gaza as genocide and said the central question is whether Israel should receive American tax dollars. He would be the first Muslim U.S. senator if elected.

The winner faces former Republican representative Mike Rogers, who is running unopposed in his primary and is backed by President Donald Trump. Michigan last elected a Republican senator in 1994, but the state voted for Trump in 2024 after supporting Joe Biden in 2020. Total spending in the Democratic primary has reached roughly $80 million, according to multiple campaign finance reports, with pro-Israel groups accounting for the largest single share.

The outcome will indicate whether progressive candidates can prevail in battleground states or whether establishment-backed moderates retain an edge when general-election viability is at stake. Both candidates have said they will support the nominee in November.
