An armed parent ended the attack minutes after it began, yet the shooter’s access to the firearm and the absence of any established motive leave open the central questions of prevention and response that investigators continue to examine.

What outlets missed

Neither report supplied the precise sequence of radio traffic confirming the shooter was neutralized before officers reached the classroom. Details on how Giamanco obtained and carried his own firearm remained limited to a single reference that he held a concealed-weapon permit. The articles also omitted any description of the school’s physical layout or prior security measures that allowed rapid entry through locked doors.

Four people died and two others suffered critical wounds when a 16-year-old entered Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, and opened fire with a shotgun. The attack began shortly before 1 p.m. on October 15 when the shooter forced entry by firing through locked doors. Within three minutes police reached the building, yet the gunman had already been confronted inside a special-education classroom.

Kaylub Giamanco, 36, a carpenter and father of two students at the school, heard shots while returning from lunch, followed the shooter inside, and stopped the attack. The gunman, identified by law enforcement sources as Griffin John II, died at the scene. Bend police chief Mike Krantz confirmed that officers found four fatalities and two survivors in critical condition upon entering the building.

The victims included children ages 5, 8 and 11, plus one teacher. The 5-year-old was later named Rhoam Summer by family. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher remained hospitalized. The shotgun had been purchased by the shooter’s mother, according to unnamed law enforcement sources cited by multiple outlets.

No motive has been established. Krantz stated the investigation would be lengthy and noted that every Bend officer had completed active-threat training weeks earlier. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the civilian intervention while expressing condolences. Superintendent Steven Cook described the shock of an event that residents had hoped would never reach their community.

Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Ron Wyden, called for tighter gun restrictions. Updates are scheduled for a Friday press conference.
