Diana DeGette on June 30 in a contest Justice Democrats polling showed within the margin of error.
Similar contests loom in Michigan’s Senate primary and Wisconsin’s gubernatorial race. Center-left strategist Matt Bennett of Third Way noted the energy is concentrated in very blue areas and has not yet flipped Republican-held seats. National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Marinella said the results show the Democratic establishment has “surrendered to Zohran Mamdani and the socialist wing.” Outside New York, establishment-backed candidates prevailed in New York’s 17th District, Utah’s 1st District, Maryland, and South Carolina.
Kiros, a former attorney who immigrated from Ethiopia as a child, lost a New York law-firm job after an essay critical of Israel; she has also called for term limits on members of Congress. DeGette supports Medicare for All and ending most U.S. military aid to Israel except defensive systems, yet faces criticism over her corporate PAC contributions and long tenure. No independent public polling has confirmed Kiros’s lead. DSA-backed candidates have won more than 30 races this cycle, according to the group’s tracker, including the recent Washington, D.C., mayoral primary.
