US Strikes Iran Ninth Night After Three Troops Killed

Three American service members died in attacks linked to Iranian missiles and drones over the past week, prompting the United States to carry out a ninth consecutive night of strikes on Iranian military targets. The deaths bring the publicly reported total to 17 since the conflict began in late February.

U.S. Central Command said the latest strikes, completed early Monday, targeted command centers, air defenses, missile and drone sites, and communications networks. The command stated the goal was to reduce Iran’s capacity to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump told reporters the strikes honored the fallen troops and that Iran had been left with little military capability remaining.

The two soldiers identified Monday were 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas. Both were killed at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks, according to the Defense Department. A third service member died in northern Iraq on July 18 while conducting a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone.

Iranian authorities reported at least 50 people killed and more than 500 wounded in U.S. strikes over the past three weeks. Iranian state media and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed further attacks on U.S. positions in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain and asserted that two oil tankers had been struck in the Strait of Hormuz; those claims could not be independently verified by other reporting.

The current phase of fighting centers on control of the Strait of Hormuz after an interim agreement collapsed earlier this month. The United States maintains it is acting to keep the waterway open to international traffic; Iran asserts authority over passage. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States remains open to diplomacy provided Iran changes its behavior on shipping attacks.
