Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement inserts her into a high-stakes Senate primary where the Democratic nominee will face a narrow-margin Republican opponent. The race tests whether progressive mobilization or establishment support prevails in a battleground state.
What outlets missed
Neither outlet provided independent polling numbers or fundraising totals beyond the super PAC figure for Stevens. El-Sayed’s prior run for governor and his exact age and background details received limited attention. The piece from the Washington Examiner listed additional endorsers such as Representatives Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, and Rashida Tlaib, which the New York Times did not include. No outlet reported on voter turnout projections or early voting data for the Aug. 4 primary.
Michigan’s Aug. 4 Democratic Senate primary now carries added weight for the party’s direction. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, placing her behind the progressive candidate in a contest Democrats view as essential to retaining Senate control.
Ocasio-Cortez gave the endorsement in an interview with The New York Times. She argued that El-Sayed’s campaign has built the coalition needed to win the state in November. “I think that Abdul gives us that right now,” she said, while noting ideological differences within the party.
Senator Chuck Schumer has backed Representative Haley Stevens, the more moderate candidate. El-Sayed also holds endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and the United Auto Workers. He has called for Medicare for all and has not accepted contributions from AIPAC. Stevens has received more than $16 million in super PAC support, including from pro-Israel groups. State Senator Mallory McMorrow is the third candidate in the race.
El-Sayed, a former Michigan public health director, would be the first Muslim U.S. senator if elected. Recent polls show him leading. The winner will face Republican Mike Rogers in November. Rogers lost the 2024 Senate race to Democrat Elissa Slotkin by fewer than 20,000 votes.
Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed several House candidates this cycle who later won primaries. She has not endorsed challengers to sitting House Democrats. El-Sayed said the endorsement signals the campaign’s direction but did not specify further campaign appearances by Ocasio-Cortez.
