Multiple performers including Young MC, Morris Day, and Martina McBride have pulled out of the semiquincentennial events citing misleading information or threats. The exodus has drawn mockery from late-night hosts and analysts questioning the festival's viability. Organizers face mounting setbacks just weeks before the planned July celebrations.

Multiple performers withdrew after learning of Freedom 250’s political ties, citing a gap between the nonpartisan description they received and the event’s actual sponsorship. Organizers maintain the program is open to all Americans and continue recruitment. The pattern of exits leaves the June 25 start date with a reduced roster and unresolved questions about participation.
What outlets missed
Most coverage omitted that Freedom 250 operates alongside the separate, congressionally created America250 commission established years earlier. Few noted the event’s specific programming elements such as Military & Veterans Appreciation Day, Faith Values and Inspiration Day, and MAHA Monday tied to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Only one outlet recorded that planning documents and federal agency involvement predate the current administration. The distinction between the Trump-initiated group and the official bipartisan commission received inconsistent attention across reports.
Performers scheduled for a series of free concerts on the National Mall have withdrawn in rapid succession, leaving organizers of the Great American State Fair with a thinned lineup weeks before the June 25 opening. The 16-day event, running through July 10, forms part of Freedom 250 programming tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary. Several acts cited a mismatch between the nonpartisan framing they were given and the event’s documented political associations.
Young MC posted on Facebook that he had informed his agents he would not appear, stating artists were never told about political involvement and describing the event as politically charged after SPIN magazine labeled it Trump-backed. Morris Day wrote simply on Facebook, “It’s A No For Me.” The Commodores announced they would not perform, explaining their music serves as their voice and they choose not to affiliate publicly with any single political party. Martina McBride posted on Instagram that she had asked repeated questions and received assurances the June 25 show would celebrate all 50 states in a nonpartisan manner; she said details changed after the announcement and withdrew. Bret Michaels stated the opportunity had been presented as a celebration honoring veterans, military, first responders and teachers but evolved into something more divisive, adding that threats to his fans, band, crew and family prompted his exit.
Freedom 250 describes itself as a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) with Republican and Democratic congressional commissioners; a spokesperson said the group focuses on events that honor history and engage all Americans. The organization was launched under President Trump and remains distinct from the congressionally mandated America250 commission. Remaining performers include Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, C+C Music Factory and Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli. Jodie Rocco, one of the original studio vocalists for Milli Vanilli, told the Associated Press that neither she nor her sister had been asked to appear, despite the group’s name on promotional materials. C+C Music Factory’s Freedom Williams posted a video indicating he plans to perform despite not supporting Trump.
The withdrawals began the same day the initial lineup was released and continued over the following 48 hours. Organizers said they are still working with artists and managers to secure participation. The fair is planned to feature state pavilions, exhibits, rides and nightly mainstage performances.
