Trump Urges Immediate Ceasefire After Iran-Israel Missile Exchanges

Missile strikes between Israel and Iran have renewed fears that a fragile April ceasefire could collapse, threatening wider regional fighting and higher global energy prices. Oil benchmarks rose more than 5 percent on Monday as both sides traded attacks for the first time since the truce took effect.

Iran fired nearly 30 missiles toward Israel overnight after Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Israel responded with strikes on Iranian air-defense systems and a petrochemical facility in Mahshahr, while explosions were reported in Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz and Karaj. The Houthis in Yemen also launched missiles at Israel and declared a ban on Israeli shipping in the Red Sea. No casualties were reported in the latest round.

President Trump posted on Truth Social that “Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting.’” In a follow-up message he wrote that both sides were “looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE” and that final negotiations would proceed “subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way.” The U.S. blockade of Iranian ports would remain until a deal is reached, he added. Multiple outlets reported that Trump had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone not to retaliate, though Israel proceeded with strikes.

Iran’s foreign ministry said diplomatic consultations continued despite the strikes and described U.S. demands as maximalist. Israel’s military said it had dismantled rebuilt Iranian defense systems. Pakistani mediators shuttled between capitals carrying messages to Iran’s leadership. Brent crude jumped above $97 a barrel.

The exchanges occurred against stalled U.S.-Iran talks aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and limiting Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran has insisted any agreement must halt Israeli operations in Lebanon. Netanyahu has not commented publicly; Israeli media reported he would convene his security cabinet.
